Nichols College To Advance Homeland Security Training For National Guard Members

April 23, 2020

Nichols College is now participating in the National Guard Bureau’s Homeland Security Institute (HSI) University Program, which assists service members in obtaining a master’s degree in counterterrorism at a more expedient and affordable pace.

The HSI University Program (UP) enables service members who complete the program of study, which includes the primary military education and Federal Emergency Management Agency courses, to receive six credits toward earning a Master of Science in Counterterrorism (MSC) degree at Nichols College.

The 30-credit MSC is designed for public and private security professionals to analyze, assess, and mitigate the risk of homegrown and international violent extremism, employing applications such as cybersecurity and border security. In addition to the six credits, graduates of the HSI program are eligible for the special discounted pricing offered to all active duty, reserve, and veteran military service members pursuing an MSC degree at Nichols.

“The partnership is an opportunity for Nichols College to strengthen our commitment to service members and further demonstrate our value as an educational resource for military and law enforcement officers on the frontlines of defense against threats of violent extremism,” said Tom Stewart, associate dean for graduate programs at Nichols College.

Nichols is one of several colleges participating in the University Program, which offers service members the opportunity to obtain a master’s degree in a homeland security discipline after completing the HSI Program of Study. Others include Northeastern University, Notre Dame College, Tulane University and Eastern Kentucky University.

About the National Guard Homeland Security Institute

The HSI provides educational opportunities in homeland security and emergency management for members of the National Guard and industry professionals. HSI was created to address an educational gap between the globally focused Army and Air Force’s Professional Military Education doctrine and the unique requirements of the National Guard’s state mission.
