Beaupre cited in Boston Business Journal series

September 8, 2023

According to research conducted by Boston Business Journal, within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts women “overwhelmingly fill the top roles at philanthropic foundations affiliated with the state’s largest corporate givers. But at the same time, they are far underrepresented in the chief executive roles of those same companies.”

Jean Beaupre, Ed.D., Dean of the Nichols College School of Business, offered a reason why. “Philanthropic work is associated with traditional gendered values placed on women: empathy, collaboration, listening, fairness, giving and ethics,” said Beaupre. “There’s an expectation that women have these qualities, so there is a clear alignment between the nonprofit world and the qualities that women are expected to bring.”

Beaupre is also founding director of the Institute for Women’s Leadership (IWL) at Nichols. Established in 2013, the innovative center develops the leadership potential of female students and serves as a resource and authoritative voice on women’s leadership in Massachusetts and beyond. The IWL produces the biennial Massachusetts Women’s Leadership Index which monitors and analyzes how the representation of women in power is progressing in Massachusetts and across the nation. Students are actively involved in the production of the report, providing a distinctive experiential learning opportunity that prepares them for career success.
